Initial Portuguese construction, in 1629, by Governor Matias de Albuquerque order. The Fort was named Diogo Paes Fort and had as objective to establish the security of the Recife Port against possible invasions.
On February 28, 1630, it was occupied by the Dutch who continued with the construction (1630-1631) using sand, tree branches and whale oil (cleaning) as material, having the name of Bruyne Fort – in honor of the newly conquered Captaincy Administrative Council President, that name was later attributed by the natives to “Brum”.
It is one of the oldest monuments of Recife, surpassing 380 years of existence. Always managed by the Brazilian Army, which inaugurated in its premises, on January 5, 1987, theBrum Fort Military Museum.
