The Malakoff Tower is an important monument located in Recife Neighborhood, in an área put under the care of the IPHAN ( National Artistic and Historic Patrimony Institute) because of its historical value . Built between 1853 and 1855 (with materials from the demolition of Bom Jesus Fort) to serve as an astronomical observatory and monumental gate of the Navy Arsenal. Its was named by the Recife population as a tribute to the Russian fortress, called Torre Malakoff, stage of the War of the Crimea, happened in century XIX.
In the year 2000, the Tower was transformed into a cultural space with emphasis on music and photography. There are 8 (eight) exhibition rooms, as well as educational and administrative rooms. In the outdoor area, an amphitheater serves as a space for various cultural events. The Malakoff Tower is a monument under the care and run by Fundarpe ( Pernambuco Historic and Artistic Patrimony Fundation).
Tuesday to Friday, from 11 am to 5 pm, Saturdays and Sundays from 2 pm to 5 pm. Free entrance.
