Derby square was designed by landscaper roberto burle marx and built between 1924 and 1926. A generation of people from recife knew the square as the manati square, because it had a tank with this animal.
The square is located in one of the main public transport corridors (av. Agamenon magalhães av.). In the surroundings of the square it can be observed several old houses and the derby barracks that had its foundation in 1924.
