Inaugurated in the year 1888, being the first trip from Recife to Caruaru, it was the main railway station of Pernambuco capital, with trains to the suburbs of Recife, to the country side and to other states of the Northeast region. From 1972, it also housed the Recife Train Museum, the first Railway Museum in Brazil.
Desabled in October 1983 for the advancement of Recife metro works, the Central Station was reopened in 1985, as access to the new station Recife and Train Museum.
In 2009 the Central Station was again closed to the public and reopened in December 2014. Since then, the Train Museum that in the past was patronized by the sociologist Gilberto Freyre, today presents a sample that unites the railway memory of Pernambuco with the new technologies.
Through the exhibition “Arrivals and departures: The memory of the train in Pernambuco”, the Museum seeks to bring to light the advantages of
rail transport, its benefits for the development of the state and the great losses generated by the decay of the railway in Brazil.
