Inaugurated in August 24th of 1915, was built from the idealization and investment of 200 “contos de réis” of the Commander Bento Luís de Aguiar, the Park Theater had its structure raised in steel and cement, with decoration made by the painters Henrique Elliot and Mário Nunes.
The Theater’s biggest architectural innovation was to include a Garden to help at the climatization of the environment, respecting de conditions of the tropical climate of the city of Recife. At its inauguration time, the tickets were acquired at the Park Hotel, that is beside it and for a long time had direct connections with the theater facilities.
There were four big interventions since its inauguration, in 1915. The first one dated 1929, when the theater was expanded and adapted to the Cine-theater function. At the 1950 decade, in the Mayor Pelópidas da Silveira’s management, the theater closed its doors, which reopened in 1959, with the presentation of the play “Onde Canta o Sabiá” (Where the Sabiá Sings) directed by Hermilo Borba Filho.
The second remodeling of the Theater happened in 1968, when the space received settings to give it a modern characteristic. The penultimate big intervention was in 1986, when were observed some little evidences of restoration work. Lastly, in the year 2000, were realized works to install the climatization system.
In 2010, the Park Theater closes again to renovation, this time because of serious infiltration problems that damaged the physical, hydraulics and electrical structures. The renovation, started in 2013, ends in November 2020, bringing renovation of all building structure and decorative elements, restoring the original architectural designed in 1929. Yet won a special and inviting landscaping design for the public. In addiction to be a space that will promote the meeting of people, the theater’s Garden will be a extension of the main stage, being a scenario for open air presentations.
