Hermilo Borba Filho Theater emerged from the adaptation to scenic space of two warehouses that were in the back of the Apollo Theater. It began his activities in 1987 with the play O Balcão by Jean Genet, directed by Antonio Cadengue and acting by the Actor Training Course at UFPE students. After extensive renovation, it was reopened in 1988, taking the name of the playwright from Pernambuco Hermilo Borba Filho, until then, was called the Apolo Theater Experimental Center. The Hermilo Borba Filho Theater has the capacity for 120 people. The Hermilo Borba Filho Theater is a flexible configuration space, and can adjust its bleachers to different formations. Because it has bleachers, it is not such a comfortable space for the public, however because of its characteristics, it usually hosts group shows, and therefore its programming deserves attention. Hermilo Borba Filho, from Pernambuco (Palmares, July 8, 1917 – Recife, June 2, 1976) was born in Engenho Verde, Palmares, Pernambuco Mata Sul Zone, brazilian, was a writer, literary critic, journalist, playwright, director, theatologist and translator. Bachelor’s degree in Law and Social Sciences from the Recife Law School.
An important man in the Brazilian theater, he wrote and published seven novels, three short story books, two novels, twelve researches and essays and more than a dozen translations (Tulio Carella, Aretino, Marques de Sade, Leon Tolstoi, Calderon de La Barca, Jorge Luís Borges, among others). He wrote 23 plays, and only 7 were published in his lifetime. He has staged plays throughout Brazil and abroad (Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Portugal, Switzerland, Holland, Germany, Norway and Finland).
