For you who are thinking about coming to Recife or you who already live here, I want to show you that our city has much more than sun and sea, incredible museums, rich culture and typical and tasty cuisine. How is it possible ???
In Recife you will find a business called creative tourism. These are places and experiences that mix everything we have at its best in a more organic, human and unusual way. In creative tourism, Recife visits you.
I’m talking about a practice that emerged in England just over 10 years ago and has been expanding to several countries in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Creative tourism emerges as a yearning for a society that increasingly favors intangible values and singular experiences with meaning, expressions, affection, solidarity, etc.
And how is that done? Doing together! I explain …
Creativity presupposes imagination, intuition and empathy. For this to be stimulated, it is necessary involvement and engagement between people and, thus relationships are created between local residents and the visitor. Creative tourism is a place to be, whether for those who live there all the time or for the traveler who stays for a certain time.
I’ll tell you some stories …
Since 2017, Recife has been dating creative tourism. It all started on the outskirts of the city. As always a pioneer, it is from the periphery that comes the richest in our culture. Do you know Carnival? In Recife you live it all year and this is possible in the neighborhood of Bomba do Hemetério, which brings together various associations, cultural groups and carnival groups.
Bomba is the largest artistic cluster in the city. The visitor can meet the people who make the Carnival of Recife, participate in costume and advertising workshops and even learn the first rhythms of maracatu. All of this goes on the procession through the streets of the neighborhood, as if it were a prankster in Momo’s revelry.
But Recife is also known for its enormous natural potential. It is in the rivers and mangroves that cut through the city that we get to another incredible creative tourism experience.
Who would have thought that a small island, embedded in the largest urban mangrove in Latin America, received about 20,000 people a year, many of them from outside Brazil. I’m talking about Ilha de Deus, a small fishing community where the visitor can experience the daily lives of its residents, go out of their way to catch shrimp and sururu and cook with an important chef from Recife who is also an island resident.
I talk about Negralinda, owner of a cozy, charming bistro that offers food blessed by God. Such thinking that it’s just eating? Negralinda will teach you how to make the most varied delicacies using the seafood caught in the rivers of Recife.
“It’s mouth-watering, when I look at you …” Only this part of Nando Cordel’s song comes to me when I go to eat the famous seafood, a typical dish from Ilha de Deus.”
And it doesn’t end there. Since 2017, creative tourism has been gaining more space more people have been arriving and the demand for Recife experiences has been increasing. It is here that the National Creative Tourism Network – Recria appears, a movement led by entrepreneurs from Bomba do Hemetério and Ilha de Deus that brought together new people, places and experiences with the potential to develop creative tourism.
Gradually, several languages started to adhere to creative tourism, making Recife an international reference. In 2019 the city joined the Creative Tourism Network, an international network that brings together the world’s leading destinations for creative tourism. Currently, Recife is the only Brazilian city to integrate the network with important destinations such as Barcelona, Paris, Bangkok, Loulé, Ibiza and Valparaíso.
Nowadays, Recife’s creative tourism experiences are not only on the outskirts of the city, but also in the noble areas, in the historic center, in museums, in cultural facilities, on boats, in parks, in rivers, in craft breweries and under two wheels. It’s a lot of incredible stuff!
Like Nando Cordel, I hope I left you with “mouth watering” when talking about our creative tourism. It was just to leave a taste, see. Pinch you.
