The Church of São Pedro dos Clérigos, reopened in December 2017, is now part of the Sacred Reef project, which shows the tourists and the people from Recife the treasures of the sacred architecture of the city of Pernambuco. On the spot, bilingual mediators will present the space to visitors, starting this Tuesday (16). They will be in the temple always from Tuesday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 1pm. This is the eighth church to be part of the project, which is carried out by the Recife City Hall, through the Secretary of Tourism, Sports and Leisure. The initiative has already served more than 120,000 people since its inception in November 2014.

The opening of the concatedral presents itself as an opportunity to strengthen the tourist and cultural activity of the city, as well as for the people from Recife to appreciate another important artistic collection related to the history of the city. The construction of the São Pedro dos Clérigos Church began 1728, and it was completed in 1782, opening the doors of one of the most beautiful sets of Brazilian baroque. The temple stands out downtown Recife for its unusual verticality to the churches of the same period. The monumental stonework on the facade is balanced with the building linking central door and window through scrolls, flowers, Saint Peter’s coat of arms and mermaids at the ends.

In the inner area, the amazing octagonal nave has the at the ceiling the mastepiece of the Pernambuco baroque painting: Saint Peter blessing the Catholic world, painted by the painter João de Deus Sepúlveda. Altars distributed on the sides house carvings and precious images of saints, culminating in the high altar, where there is the image of the patron saint of the church in the center under a lining with medallions representing the apostles. The sacristy has a wooden chest with gold panels framing saints and martyrs.

Sacred Recife – Launched in November 2014, the project offers guided visits to the city’s important temples, presenting the historical and religious aspects of the monuments that keep alive the faith and culture of the people of Pernambuco. In addition to the church of São Pedro dos Clérigos, the project includes the churches of Madre de Deus, Golden Chapel, Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Homens Pretos of Recife, Basilica of Nossa Senhora of Carmo, Santa Tereza D’Ávila da Ordem Terceira do Carmo , the Basilica of Nossa Senhora da Penha, and the KahalZur Israel Synagogue, which entered the project in 2017. In the places, visitors are welcomed by monitors, university students, trained by the Secretary of Tourism, Sports and Leisure to talk about the collection and history of each place.
